What is Gasification?

The Old Method: Conventional Combustion


Combustion, or the direct burning of coal, is a complete oxidation process, which primarily produces heat (thermal energy). The by-products are solid waste, nitrogen oxide (NOx), sulfur oxide (SO2), and carbon dioxide (CO2), most of which are potentially hazardous to the environment.

Burning coal is of limited value, it’s dirty, and it makes the control and capture of CO2 very difficult, if not impossible.

Because of the relentless rise in oil and gas prices everyone expects a massive increase worldwide in unconventional technologies like gas-to-liquids (GTL) and gasification.

We believe that gasification offers significant economic and environmental advantages as an unconventional source of energy in a carbon constrained world.

The New Technology: Gasification


Gasification is a partial oxidation process which converts coal, lignite, petcoke, biomass and various combustible wastes into syngas. Syngas can be used to produce electric power and a number of high value clean energy products such as chemicals, fertilizers, substitute (or synthetic) natural gas (SNG), hydrogen, steam, and transportation fuels.

Gasification produces almost zero emissions and its non-hazardous by-products (nitrogen, argon, sulfur and slag) are very marketable. Furthermore, gasification plants use significantly less water than traditional coal-based plants and, using commercially proven technology, CO2 can be captured for storage, sold for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) or for enhanced coal bed methane (ECBM).
